At 2 weeks old, I think our great-grandaughter Maddy is probably the youngest visitor to Observation Point ever. Her adventurous parents Matt and Christine Cherry are starting her off early.

We have the cabin all ready for the season. we are up here in March and the weather is gorgeous. Get your reservations in soon. Remember, first come first served. The trees look great, very green and lush. Come up where it’s cool.
The cabin is better than ever. We keep refining the camping experience making our cabin paradise better than ever. This year Nellie and I finished painting the cinder block wall the same color as the cabin. We also added a new screen tent out in the trees where we can enjoy reading and resting away from the flies and bugs. Last year the roads were completely torn up while the water lines were being put in. The mess was terrible with big stones everywhere. The entrance to our property was partially blocked as well. But now, they are in the final stages of completion, and the roads are in better shape. We chose not to spend $45,000 for water, or another $10,000 to bring in electricity. We like the cabin just fine the way it is. However when we are gone you all may choose differently.

We had a mild winter and an early start to the 2025 cabin season. Get your cabin dates scheduled by emailing your dates to us soon. Remember, the cabin is first come-first served.

We started staying at the cabin in April this year. The weather was perfect and we completed a lot of re-furbishing projects. The old deck was completely collapsed from the heavy winter snows, but Benjamin Rogers saved the day by re-building the entire deck, adding a new lower seat/step and a new section of fence. Matt Cherry and Kade Simmons spent a couple of days with their chain saws and cleaned up a lot of dead timber. We resurfaced the driveway with two giant dump truck loads of fresh gravel. We added a parking area for the former teen cabin, which is now my “East Zion Studio.” Yep, it has a new sign and a nice painting area in the front room, but the four bunks and king size bed are still there and usable by everyone. We re-painted the main cabin and the studio cabin. Thanks to Derick and Hannah who did lots of expert painting, assisted by Clara. Trish and Robert Eves added their painting expertise to the main cabin. We cleaned up the flag and bear circle in front and bought a new flag. The weather takes its toll on the cabin, but it is in better condition than ever thanks to everyone’s help.

It was fun having the Maestri family come visit the cabin in July. Luckily they came before the record heatwave, but they enjoyed the bows and arrows, making crafts to “sell,” and relaxing. Jennie and Ellie enjoyed a morning hike out to Observation Point.

We are grateful to LuAnne for paying for new carpet for the main cabin. The old carpet was ragged and torn as it had been there for some 60 years. We had to remove everything from the cabin, which was a big chore. Thanks to Jon, Alyssa, and Clara for helping us with that project, and to Jess and Christian for helping us move the heavy old cook stove outside. The Ben Rogers family is going to take the stove, as it is a family heirloom. The new carpet is wonderful and we spruced up the cabin interior a lot. Come and see it!

The Snows took their toll this year. This will be the second time we have to rebuild the decks due to snow load. We are grateful to Ben Rogers for his constant construction help and repairs. Even with the high elevation, temperatures at the cabin during the summer are in the 90’s as St. George suffers from temperatures up to 115 degrees.

Yesterday we had a great film crew from PBS Utah spend a couple of days at the Rockin’ R while they were interviewing Roland for a new documentary on artists and Zion National Park. They also filmed Roland painting outdoors in Zion National Park.
